IT IS CRUCIAL TO ATTEND THE
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WORKSHOP
TUES. FEB. 5, 2002 at 1:00
pm
at the Levy County Courthouse, Bronson
IF you can't attend write letters, see info below.
The Planning Commission has recommended
that changes be made to PREVENT COMMERCIAL MINING within 2 miles of platted
subdivisions of 5 acres or less.
These are areas in the county that would be
prohibited to major mining operations by the new regulations:
1. Within 500 feet of an abandoned dump, landfill or
effluent pond. If blasting is used there will be a radius of 1000 feet.
2. Within 1,000 feet of a public water supply wellhead of
100,000 gallons per day or greater.
3. Within a one mile radius of a public water supply well
head if blasting is used as a method of extraction.
4. Within a three mile radius of the boundary of a
designated State Resource, a County, State or Federal Park, a school or a
hospital.
5. Within two miles of the boundary of a platted
residential area of 5 acres or less.
Mining Interests will oppose these
changes.
We MUST SUPPORT THESE CHANGES by
being at this workshop. We have been attending these meetings and it often boils
down to body counts.
Limerock Industries (White Construction) is STILL working to get their D.E.P.
Permit for Manatee Pit at the state level. The Dept. of Environmental Protection
has not permitted it yet, but will proably issue a permit since Florida's Laws
on mines and where they should or shouldn't be are practically nonexistent.
More unsettling is informed speculation that Martin
Marietta Aggregate, one of the largest mining
corporations in the US is set to buy White Construction and will mine this site
if it is permitted and more than likely elsewhere in Levy County.
Call and write letters to the
County Commissioners telling them
you support the new zoning proposals:
